Local Newspapers Endorse Fluoridation

  • The Oregonian: “By voting this month to fluoridate a water system serving more than 900,000 people, Portland residents can further protect the teeth of a sizable percentage of the state’s children and adults. Fluoridation opponents want voters to see skulls and crossbones when they open their ballots. Instead, voters should see healthy teeth and keep in mind that the vast majority of Americans served by community water systems — about 74 percent — receive fluoridated water.”
  • The Portland Mercury: “It doesn’t have to be this way. Portland can still make a rational choice come May 21. We’re not gunning for a Pulitzer Prize, like the Tampa Bay Times, which won journalism’s top award last month for a series of editorials staunchly defending fluoridation and debunking its myriad myths. But we can do our part for Portland. … Because those sane-sounding anti-fluoride arguments you’ve been turning around in your head? They’re wrong.”
  • The Willamette Week: “Among the hundreds of fluoride studies, there is little evidence that fluoridation is harmful. Here’s how the CDC put it: ‘The weight of peer-reviewed scientific evidence does not support an association between water fluoridation and any adverse health effect or systemic disorders.’ … Fluoridation critics cannot produce any nefarious explanation for why government scientists, public health officials and dentists all support fluoridation.”
  • The Portland Tribune: “We support Measure 26-151 for this reason: After listening to all the arguments and reading as much of the research as we can handle, we are convinced that adding fluoride to Portland’s water supply will improve the health of this community’s children.”
  • Street Roots: “Every major health care organization in the country, from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to the National Institutes of Health, has come to the same conclusion: Fluoridation is safe and effective. It is time for Portland to embrace the norm when it comes to protecting our kids. It’s time Portland makes a different choice. It’s time to fluoridate our water as an act of social justice.”
  • The Skanner News: “The Skanner News endorses Measure 26-151, because it will improve oral health for at-risk communities. We haven’t seen any photos or reports, even after decades, of deaths due to water fluoridation.”

Portland City Club Endorses Fluoridation

    Research Committee Majority: “…at the fluoride concentrations proposed for the Portland water supply and with the planned wastewater treatment, the Committee does not expect adverse environmental effects based on the scientific studies that have been conducted so far.”
    Research Committee Unanimous Conclusion: “Portland has a substantial dental health problem, and we as a community must take steps to address this issue.”
